Advocates for Youth  and its partners direct this observance. The 2020 theme announced by Advocates for Youth is "Young People to the Front: Ending the HIV Epidemic in America #OurHIVPlan #NYHAAD". NYHAAD educates the public about the impact of HIV/AIDS on youth and highlights the work youth do to strengthen the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

NTHTD recognizes the importance of routine HIV testing, status awareness and continued focus on HIV prevention and treatment efforts among transgender and gender non-binary people.

National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) was first observed on June 27, 1995. NHTD is a day to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status, and get linked to care and treatment. The 2019 theme is "Doing It My Way".
